The 30th meeting of the AI FP&A Committee marked a special milestone—the 8th anniversary of the Committee. To celebrate the occasion, we explored a new format: an open discussion focused on how Agentic AI will redefine the FP&A operating model and the future of autonomous FP&A. The session brought together finance leaders from around the world to share practical experiences, ideas, and concerns on the topic.
The open discussion was facilitated by Larysa Melnychuk, Founder and CEO at FP&A Trends Group, Michael Coveney, Head of Research at FP&A Trends Group, and Atif Hafeez, Member of the AI FP&A Committee, Global CFO and Board Advisor.
The discussion centred around four key questions: which FP&A activities could be supported or initiated by AI agents, how accountability might evolve, what new skills finance professionals will need, and what governance structures must be in place before organisations expand AI-driven autonomy.
Participants shared early examples of using AI Agents in areas such as forecasting, variance analysis, automated accruals, invoice processing, and data analytics. Many agreed that AI Agents can significantly enhance efficiency, but human oversight remains essential, particularly in high-trust areas such as external reporting and strategic decision-making.
The discussion also highlighted how FP&A roles are likely to evolve. As AI takes over more routine tasks, finance professionals will need stronger critical thinking, business partnering, system thinking, and storytelling skills, alongside a growing familiarity with AI tools.
Governance was another key theme. Committee members stressed the importance of clear guardrails, data governance, security controls, and transparency, including the ability to explain how AI arrives at its conclusions.
Overall, the discussion confirmed that while Autonomous FP&A is still emerging, organisations are already experimenting with AI agents. Success will depend on strong data foundations, robust governance, and finance professionals who are ready to adapt and lead in this new environment.
